Names

Cedoaria, Cetoal, E Zhu, E-Zhu, Indian Arrowroot, Kua, Shoti, Temu Kuning, Temu Putih, Turmeric, Zedoaire, Zedoária, Zedoarie rhizoma, Zitwer, Zitwerwirtzelstock.

Curcuma zedoaria.  

Family: Zingiberaceae.

 

Functions

  • breaks up blood stasis, promotes movement of Qi, alleviates pain
  • dissolve food stagnation (accumulations)

Indications

Orally, E Zhu / Zedoary is used for colic, spasms, stimulating appetite, improving digestion, stimulating bile flow, and as an anti-inflammatory.

In combination herbal products, zedoary extracts are used for gastrointestinal complaints and stimulating bile flow.

Folk medicine, zedoary is used for nervous diseases.

Dosage: 3 – 9g.

Main constituents

Like the closely related turmeric, zedoary contains several specific sesquiterpenes; among the components yet identified, there are germacrone-4,5-epoxide, germacrone, furanodienone, curzerenone, zederone, dehydrocurdione, curcumenol, isocurcumenol, curcumenone, curmanolide A and curmanolide B.
