Effects

  • cool blood, stop bleeding – vomiting blood, bleeding gums, coughing     blood, blood in stool or urine, uterine bleeding
  • stop cough, lung heat – cough with phlegm, thick bloody sputum
  • promotes healing of burns – topically for early stages

Explanation:

1. Cooling blood and arrest bleeding

This drug can be used to treat hemoptysis, hematemesis, epistaxis, hematuria, hemafecia, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, etc. which are due to heat in the blood system. This is a drug for astringing and cooling blood and arresting bleeding. It can be used alone or in combination with other drugs for cooling blood and arresting bleeding, such as Radix Rehmanniae, Folium Nelumbinis, etc. In treating bleeding due to cold of deficiency type, the drug can be used in combination with Folium Artemisiae Argri, Rhizoma Zingiberis Praeparata,etc.

2. Promoting the growth of hair and blackening hair

This drug can be used to treat deficiency of blood due to blood-heat, baldness after disease, or premature graying of hair seen in young Radix Polygoni Multiflori, Fructus Ligustri Lucidi, Radix Rehmanniae, etc.

Besides, this drug can also be used relieve cough and dispel phlegm and can be used to treat cough and asthma with much sputum, It can also be used to treat abnormal leukorrhea due to damp-heat owing to its effect of eliminating dampness. In external treatment, the drug can be used to treat seborrheic dermatitis. A solution of 60g of the fresh drug mixed in 60% alcohol (or spirit) for 7 days can be applied to the affected area.
