Also Used For: Orally, capsicum is used to stimulate digestion, as an antiflatulent, for colic, diarrhea, cramps, toothache, to improve peripheral circulation, for reducing blood clotting tendencies, seasickness, alcoholism, malarial fever, yellow and other fevers, for reducing cholesterol, and preventing arteriosclerosis and heart disease. Topically, capsicum is used for the pain of shingles, and for post-herpetic, trigeminal, diabetic, post-mastectomy, and post-surgical neuralgias, HIV-associated peripheral neuropathy, and fibromyalgia. It is also used as a counterirritant to desensitize nerves and to create a feeling of warmth. Capsicum is also used to relieve muscle spasms, as a gargle for laryngitis, and as a deterrent to thumb-sucking or nail biting. Capsicum has also been used as an inhalational provocation test to distinguish sensory hyperreactivity of the airways from asthma. In food, capsicum is used as a condiment. In manufacturing, capsicum is the main ingredient used in many self-defense sprays, also referred to as pepper spray.
Contraindications: Cayenne pepper is contraindicated during full heat patterns, pregnancy, acute inflammation or irritations, peptic ulcer, bladder like symptoms and may cause blistering if left on topically for long durations of time.
