Properties:

  • Cayenne pepper warms the middle, relieves abdominal fullness in patterns of stomach cold or spleen yang deficiency (diarrhea, dysentery)
  • expels cold, rescues collapsed yang
  • heart blood stagnation and deficiency
  • heart yang deficiency
  • promotes sweating, expel wind cold dampness, clears fever, benefits throat
  • promotes tissue repair, reduces contusions and relieves pain
  • when combined with other herbs or in a formula cayenne  adds more yang, move moving properties to the concoction.

 

Also Used For:

Orally, capsicum is used to stimulate digestion, as an antiflatulent, for colic, diarrhea, cramps, toothache, to improve peripheral circulation, for reducing blood clotting tendencies, seasickness, alcoholism, malarial fever, yellow and other fevers, for reducing cholesterol, and preventing arteriosclerosis and heart disease.

Topically, capsicum is used for the pain of shingles, and for post-herpetic, trigeminal, diabetic, post-mastectomy, and post-surgical neuralgias, HIV-associated peripheral neuropathy, and fibromyalgia. It is also used as a counterirritant to desensitize nerves and to create a feeling of warmth.

Capsicum is also used to relieve muscle spasms, as a gargle for laryngitis, and as a deterrent to thumb-sucking or nail biting.

Capsicum has also been used as an inhalational provocation test to distinguish sensory hyperreactivity of the airways from asthma.

In food, capsicum is used as a condiment.

In manufacturing, capsicum is the main ingredient used in many self-defense sprays, also referred to as pepper spray.

 

Contraindications:

Cayenne pepper is contraindicated during full heat patterns, pregnancy, acute inflammation or irritations, peptic ulcer, bladder like symptoms and may cause blistering if left on topically for long durations of time.

 

General History Of Cayenne Pepper

Found in the 1750ís, and immediately washed all over pacific western herbal medicine, many pharmacists during this time replaced black pepper with cayenne.
