Names: Amomum tsao-ko Crevost et Lem. Tsaoko Fruit 

Properties: The pungent and the warm properties have the warming and dispering actions. Its property is strong dessccative. It potent of dispelling dampenss and cold, and is therefore indicated for the syndromes of the damp-cold retention in the middle-jiao. Besides, it can also be used to clear phlegm, prevent attack of malaria and cure malaria with alternate attacks of chills and fever caused by the internal accumulation of phlegm-dampness.  

Effects

  • dries damp, damp cold obstruction spleen – abdominal pain and distention, vomiting, diarrhea
  • malarial disorder – fever, chills with damp cold and turbid dampness
  • dissolve stagnation and distention of abdomen – nausea, spleen deficient

Indications:

  • For syndromes of excessive cold-dampness in middle-jiao and dampness retention in the Qi division manifested as abdominal distention, abdominal pain and diarrhea, it is used in combination with the drugs for dispelling dampness, promoting Qi circulation, warming the middle-jiao to dispel cold, such as tangerine peel, magnolia bark and atractylodes rhizome.
  • For malarial disease and the syndrome of excessive phlegm-dampness marked as aversion to cold, fever, oppressive chest, greasy tongue coating, it is used in combination with dichroa root, magnolia bark and areca seed (betel nut) to dispel dampness and prevent attack of malaria.

Dosage and Administration: 3-6g.

Precautions: Contraindicted in syndrome of deficiency of both Qi and blood, and those without internal cold-dampness.
