Yin Qiao San

                              

Honey Suckle and Forsythia Powder

Function: disperses Wind/Heat, clears Heat & toxicity

Composition: (dosages commonly used today)

 
Jin Yin Hua
Flos lonicerae japonicae
9-15g
 
Lian Qiao
Fructus forsythiae suspensae
9-15g
 
Jie Geng
Radix platycodi grandiflori
3-6g
 
Niu Bang Zi
Fructus arctii lappae
9-12g
  Bo He Herba menthae haplocalycis 3-6g
  Dan Dou Chi Semen sojae praeparata 3-6g
  Jing Jie Herba seu flos schizonepetae tenuifoliae 3-6g
  Dan Zhu Ye Herba lophatheri gracilis 3-6g
  Xian Lu Gen Rhizoma phragmitis communis recens 15-30g
  Gan Cao Radix glycyrrhizae uralensis 3-6g

Indications:  

Wei level warm attack, focusing on upper Jiao without hurting the middle Jiao, fever with or without slight chills, no sweating, sore throat, throbbing headache, thirst (if heat has injured the fluids), cough.  T: normal, may have red tip and/or yellow coating (red tip and yellow coat may show pathogen entering deeper); P: floating rapid.

Comments

Yin qiao san is the most commonly used formula for wind heat. It is used for treating influenza, tonsillitis, and the common cold, is available as the patent formula Yin Qiao lie nu Pian. 

Variations

  • Sang Ju Yin.  Sang Ju Yin is more gentle and can be taken by children. Also, Sang Ju Yin treats a common cold accompanied by cough, headache or red eyes.

In addition to yin qiao san, a number of other effective remedies exist for wind heat.

  • Gan Mao Ling is almost always useful in cases of wind heat.
  • If the fever is high, Zhong Gan ling is preferred.
  • If the sore throat is especially severe, Chuan Xin Lian Antiphlogistic Tablets are often prescribed.
