Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang

Rhinoceros horn and Rhemannia D.

Function: clears Heat/Fire toxin, cools blood, nourish Yin, moves Blood Stasis, stops bleeding

Composition: 

• Xi jiao should be substituted with 60 g shui niu jiao powder and cook separately for 20 minutes before including the other herbs.  it may also be substituted with 30-60 g of bai mao gen.

Indications:

Blood level heat with blood stagnation causing various bleeding disorders (vomiting, nosebleeds, uriner and stool), and distinct rasches, ever, black tarry stools (molena), abdominal distension..  May have delirium.

T: scarlet red with prickles; P: thin rapid.

Notes:

• Severe heat leads to stasis, and the rashes turn to purple.  These patients tend to want to rinse their mouth with water but not swallow.  
• This Chinese herbal formula is commonly used for all types of bleeding due to Heat and Blood Stasis.
•  This formula is to be compared to qing yin tang.
• This formula has been used in accute leukemia.  See HealingCenter

Contraindications:

Bleeding from SP Xu.
