Wind Cold

麻    黃    湯

 Ephedra Decoction

Function: releases exterior cold, promotes Lung function, arrests wheezing, Taiyang stage

Composition: 

Indications:

Wind cold (excess type) without sweats causing wheeezing or asthma.  Chills predominant over fever, generalized body aches, headache, skin may be warm to the touch. T: thin white coat (not effected); P: floating tight

Note

This is the mother formula for many others dealing with wind in the LU as,

Wind Cold with accumulation of internal water: xiao qing long tang.
Wind Cold: san ao tang.
Wind Heat: ma xing shi gan tang where guizhi is replaced by shi gao.

Cautions:

• Used only in exterior excess Wind Cold, and it's use is ceased once sweating occurs.
• Not for exterior deficient Wind Cold patterns.
• Not for external Wind Heat patterns.
• Not for patients that are prone to bleeding.
• Use caution in patients with Hypertension.
